These clips then migrate to Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok itself, platforms popular in Taiwan, where they are reshared and often repackaged to obscure their origin in Beijing's propaganda apparatus. In December, as Chinese warships and fighter jets staged massive exercises around Taiwan, a 51-second video of KMT leader Cheng Li-wun accusing President Lai of dragging Taiwan's 23 million people down a road to death circulated widely across these platforms. Cheng met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing earlier this month, where Xi urged the two parties to consolidate political mutual trust and join hands toward reunification.

Five Taiwanese security officials told Reuters that Beijing has turbocharged this information warfare tactic because familiar Taiwanese voices and accents carry greater credibility with local audiences than overt Chinese propaganda. The campaign appears designed to serve a dual purpose: discrediting the DPP government and convincing Taiwanese citizens that China's military superiority is so overwhelming that the government's push for 40 billion dollars in additional defense spending on American weapons is futile. It is a classic psychological operation scaled for the social media age, exploiting the open information environment that democracies depend upon.

Taiwan's defense ministry acknowledged a massive increase in Chinese cognitive warfare operations and said it is strengthening media literacy and psychological resilience within the armed forces. President Lai's office responded that cross-strait peace must be built on strength, not concessions to authoritarian pressure. The statement reflects a hardening consensus in Taipei that deterrence, both conventional and informational, requires sustained investment.

Taken together, these parallel developments illuminate the evolving character of great power competition in the Indo-Pacific.
