U.S. Army buys 121 Infantry Squad Vehicles from GM

The United States Army has awarded GM Defense LLC an $18 million contract for the delivery of 121 Infantry Squad Vehicles (ISV), along with anti-lock brake system and electronic stability control kits and vehicle storage covers, according to an official contract announcement.

GM Defense, based in Detroit, Michigan, received the firm-fixed-price contract with a value of $18,812,579 for this specific order. The cumulative face value of the broader contract framework reaches $458,435,865.

The contracting authority for the program is the United States Army Contracting Command located at Detroit Arsenal, Michigan.

Under the terms of the agreement, work locations and funding allocations will be determined with each order issued under the contract. The estimated completion date for the current procurement effort is April 30, 2027.

The order includes 121 Infantry Squad Vehicles as well as supporting equipment designed to improve vehicle safety and operational stability. Anti-lock brake system and electronic stability control kits will be integrated as part of the vehicle package.

The ISV is a lightweight tactical vehicle developed by GM Defense. The platform is intended to transport infantry squads quickly across difficult terrain while maintaining compatibility with air mobility operations.

Unlike heavier armored vehicles traditionally used by Army formations, the ISV is designed to emphasize speed, flexibility, and ease of deployment.

Some Army brigades are gradually phasing out heavy Stryker armored vehicles in favor of the Infantry Squad Vehicle for certain operational roles. The shift reflects the Army’s effort to provide units with vehicles capable of rapid movement and quick insertion into contested environments.

The Infantry Squad Vehicle weighs less than 2,270 kilograms, making it considerably lighter than many traditional armored vehicles used by ground forces.

Because of its relatively low weight and compact design, the ISV can be transported by several types of military helicopters. The vehicle can be carried by CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopters or UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.

This capability allows units equipped with ISVs to deploy quickly into forward positions or areas where ground transport routes may be limited.

The vehicle is designed to carry an infantry squad along with their equipment while maintaining high levels of mobility across rugged terrain.

According to program specifications, the ISV is capable of speeds exceeding 110 kilometers per hour. The vehicle also offers an operational range of more than 500 kilometers under normal conditions.

These characteristics allow infantry units to travel long distances rapidly while maintaining operational flexibility.

In addition to mobility, the ISV was designed with a reduced visual and electronic profile compared with heavier armored vehicles. This feature may help units limit detection while moving across contested areas.
