US firm Askari develops interceptor drone with hand launch

Atlanta-based Askari Defense has introduced a new hand-launched interceptor drone built to counter small unmanned aerial systems, bringing forward a compact platform aimed at short-range air defense against low-flying threats.

The system, called Rift Alpha, is designed to engage Group 1 and Group 2 drones—categories that typically include small reconnaissance and attack UAVs operating at low altitude. The interceptor has a stated range of 2 kilometers and is built for rapid deployment, allowing operators to respond quickly to nearby threats.

Rift Alpha can be launched in several ways, including by hand, from the ground, or from a box-based system. That flexibility allows it to be used in a range of settings, from mobile teams operating in the field to fixed positions that require a ready-to-fire counter-drone capability.

Once airborne, the interceptor operates autonomously. Its fire-and-forget approach means the operator does not need to guide the drone after launch, which can ease workload during fast-moving situations where multiple targets may appear at once.

The interceptor’s role is focused on close-range protection. Rather than covering large areas, it is intended to stop incoming drones before they reach their target, whether that target is personnel, vehicles, or critical infrastructure. This type of system fills a gap between electronic countermeasures and larger, more complex air defense platforms.

Small drones have become more common in recent years, both in military use and in irregular operations. Their size and flight profile can make them difficult to detect and engage with traditional air defense systems, which are often optimized for larger aircraft or missiles.

Askari Defense’s approach with Rift Alpha combines portability, short-range reach, and a simplified launch process. The system’s configuration suggests a focus on immediate response, particularly in environments where reaction time is limited and threats can appear with little warning.
