U.S. Military Misconduct in Japan: Assaulting Police, Drunk Driving, Drug Smuggling

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, August 24 - Recently, U.S. military soldiers stationed in Japan have been involved in a series of criminal incidents, with several individuals arrested on charges of assaulting police, driving under the influence, and drug smuggling. The U.S. soldiers involved have all denied the charges against them.

According to Japanese media reports on the 24th, in an incident that occurred in the early hours of the 22nd, a soldier from the U.S. Kadena Air Base was accused of driving a car that collided with a taxi in Okinawa City, resulting in the taxi driver suffering a fracture. When police arrived at the scene, the suspect attempted to flee and assaulted the officers, causing one of them to fall and injure their hand. At the time of the incident, the soldier was clearly under the influence of alcohol, but he denied the allegations, claiming that the police account was "completely incorrect."

Another U.S. soldier was accused of driving under the influence on the 23rd on a road in Naha City, Okinawa, and was arrested for allegedly violating traffic laws. During the investigation, he was uncooperative, stating that he "did not want to answer." On the 22nd, another U.S. soldier was arrested in Urasoe City, Okinawa, on suspicion of drunk driving, also denying the charge.

Additionally, according to a report from the Okinawa Customs on the 20th, a soldier stationed at the Kanazawa Base was reported to the Naha District Prosecutor's Office on the 19th for drug smuggling. This soldier had concealed drugs in his backpack when entering Japan earlier this month and was arrested by the police.

For a long time, criminal incidents involving U.S. forces stationed in Japan have been frequent, including serious cases such as murder, rape, and robbery. Statistics show that in just the year 2025, the Okinawa police handled over 100 criminal cases involving U.S. military personnel and related individuals. According to the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement, if a U.S. service member is suspected of a crime in Japan, the U.S. has priority jurisdiction, which often results in cases involving U.S. military personnel being left unresolved.
