Video: The U.S. May Begin Expanding Military Facilities in Greenland Next Year
According to a report by the U.S. defense website "Defense One" on the 20th, citing senior officials from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon plans to initiate an expansion project for military facilities on the autonomous territory of Greenland next year.
A senior Department of Defense official revealed that the Pentagon will assess the military facility expansion plan in Greenland during this winter, with the goal of starting construction on new facilities next year. The report stated that the U.S. aims to upgrade its capabilities to support the deployment of transport aircraft and fighter jets, as well as accommodate more stationed troops.
This anonymous defense official introduced that there is an airport in Mestersvig, located in eastern Greenland, which has a gravel runway approximately 1.8 kilometers long. Currently, the U.S. military is discussing what capabilities they need in eastern and northeastern Greenland in order to carry out renovations.
In Narsarsuaq, located in southern Greenland, the U.S. is also evaluating what modifications are needed for the airport runway to accommodate the takeoff and landing of active U.S. military aircraft, such as the C-130 transport aircraft. This official added that at this stage, the Pentagon has not yet locked in specific equipment to be deployed, with the primary task being to assess the feasibility of the site to support personnel and equipment.
On September 22, the United States, Denmark, and its autonomous territory of Greenland signed an agreement that allows the U.S. to establish new defense areas in Greenland and enhance its facilities and military operations. This includes establishing additional defense zones in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, while also modernizing and expanding the existing Pituffik Space Base.
