Conflicts

The Nigerian Sharia Conflict refers to waves of sectarian and political violence linked to the expansion of sharia-based criminal law in several northern Nigerian states from 1999 onward. The conflict mattered because the legal debate was never abstract. Once sharia expansion entered mixed urban politics, it touched street violence, minority fears, police behavior, and the credibility of the federal system all at once. The conflict connects constitutional federalism, religious identity, local security forces, urban riots, minority protection, the legal limits of state-level authority, and the difference between legal reform debates and organized armed conflict.
