Tarawa-class

The Tarawa class was the U.S. Navy's first purpose-built LHA amphibious assault ship class, designed to combine helicopter assault, landing craft operations, command functions, and Marine landing-force support in a single large hull. USS Tarawa and her sisters bridged earlier helicopter carriers and later Wasp-class LHDs. The class entered service during the Cold War and remained important for expeditionary presence, crisis response, and Marine Corps sea basing.

The class carried a large flight deck, hangar, well deck, troop spaces, medical facilities, command systems, and stores for sustained amphibious operations.
