Mil Mi-35

The Mil Mi-35 is best understood as a modernized export continuation of the Mi-24 Hind family. It keeps the basic idea of an armored attack helicopter that can also carry a small troop element, while adding customer-specific avionics, weapons, and maintainability improvements. For countries already familiar with the Mi-24, the Mi-35 offered a way to renew Hind capability without shifting to a completely different helicopter type.

Technically, the Mi-35 remains a heavily armed twin-engine helicopter with armored crew positions, weapon pylons, and an internal cabin. Depending on subtype, it can carry anti-tank guided missiles, unguided rockets, gun pods, and a fixed or turreted cannon installation. Modernization packages commonly improve night operations, navigation, electro-optical sighting, and engine or rotor performance. The result is less specialized than a pure attack helicopter but more versatile for customers that need fire support and transport in one airframe.

Operationally, Mi-35 fleets are attractive to countries that need a robust gunship but also value the Hind's transport bay and existing support base. The aircraft has served in air forces that use it for battlefield attack, counterinsurgency, border security, and escort missions. Its significance is not that it is the newest attack helicopter design, but that it extends a proven platform with better sensors and weapons while preserving the ruggedness and payload that made the original Mi-24 widely adopted.
