Research Notes

Mine-resistant all-terrain protected vehicle

The Oshkosh M-ATV is a mine-resistant, ambush-protected all-terrain vehicle developed for U.S. and allied forces during the Afghanistan war. It was designed to offer MRAP-level protection with better mobility on rough roads, tracks, and broken terrain than heavier first-generation MRAP trucks.

Protection with tactical mobility

The vehicle combines blast protection, independent suspension, protected crew seating, weapon-mount options, and off-road performance. That combination made it useful for patrol, convoy escort, route security, and special operations support in areas where improvised explosive devices and ambushes were major threats.

Afghanistan-driven vehicle adaptation

M-ATV shows how operational conditions can reshape vehicle procurement. The U.S. needed a protected vehicle that could survive roadside bombs while still moving through Afghanistan's mountainous and poorly developed road network, and the design became a bridge between heavy MRAPs and later tactical vehicle modernization.
