Operational V/STOL Breakthrough

The Harrier turned British vertical-lift experiments into a practical combat aircraft.

The Harrier emerged from British work on vertical and short takeoff aircraft during the Cold War. Its key achievement was making V/STOL combat aviation operational rather than experimental. The aircraft allowed dispersed basing and operations from small ships or short strips, offering a different answer to the vulnerability of large airfields.

Vectored-Thrust Pegasus Engine

Rotating nozzles on the Pegasus engine allowed vertical lift, hover, and conventional forward flight.

The Harrier's defining feature was its Rolls-Royce Pegasus turbofan with vectored thrust nozzles. The aircraft could take off vertically in light conditions or use short rolling takeoffs for heavier loads. This flexibility came with tradeoffs in payload, range, and pilot workload, but it created a unique tactical niche.

Falklands and Expeditionary Airpower

Harriers became famous for operations from ships and forward sites.

Harriers served with the RAF, Royal Navy-linked forces, and export users, with the Falklands War cementing their reputation. Their ability to operate from small decks and improvised sites made them valuable for expeditionary missions. The type's legacy runs through later AV-8B and F-35B short-takeoff/vertical-landing concepts.
