C-17 Globemaster III

The C-17 Globemaster III was developed to bridge the gap between intercontinental strategic airlift and direct delivery into austere theaters. Unlike older heavy transports optimized around major air bases, the C-17 was designed to move outsized cargo, troops, and supplies while still operating from shorter and less-developed runways. That combination made it a central platform for expeditionary operations after the Cold War.

Four high-bypass turbofan engines, a rear loading ramp, and tactical handling features allow the aircraft to support airland and airdrop missions.
