The Tarawa class was a U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship family built to embark, transport, and land Marine forces by helicopter, landing craft, and amphibious vehicles. LHA-1 Tarawa, the lead ship, helped define the modern big-deck amphibious assault ship as a hybrid aviation, command, logistics, and assault platform.
A Tarawa-class ship could operate helicopters and Harrier jump jets, launch landing craft from a well deck, host command staffs, and provide medical facilities. That made the class useful for amphibious assault, crisis response, evacuation, disaster relief, and sea-based aviation support without requiring a full aircraft carrier.
The class influenced later Wasp and America-class designs by proving the value of a large amphibious ship that could integrate air and surface connectors. Its legacy is visible in the U.S. Navy-Marine Corps emphasis on expeditionary sea bases that can support operations even when ports and airfields are unavailable.
