Resolution

The Resolution class was built to carry the United Kingdom's Polaris submarine-launched ballistic missiles. It created the Royal Navy's continuous sea-based nuclear deterrent architecture before the later Vanguard/Trident system replaced it.

Resolution-class boats carried Polaris missile tubes and nuclear propulsion for strategic patrol endurance. Their purpose was survivable deterrence, not tactical anti-ship or land-attack work in the manner of conventional attack submarines.

The class provided the UK's at-sea nuclear deterrent from the late 1960s until the 1990s. Its significance lies in national strategy, basing, patrol practice, and the Polaris/Chevaline era rather than visible combat operations.
