Type 075 (Yushen)

The Type 075, known by NATO as the Yushen class, is a landing helicopter dock intended to give the PLAN a large aviation-centered amphibious platform. It follows the Type 071 but shifts emphasis toward a full-length flight deck, rotary-wing operations, and larger-scale vertical movement of troops. This makes the ship closer in function to foreign amphibious assault ships than to a conventional landing ship. Its development shows that China wanted more than sealift: it wanted an amphibious platform able to coordinate helicopters, landing craft, command functions, and embarked ground forces from a single large hull.

The Type 075's full-length flight deck allows multiple helicopters to operate in sequence, supporting troop movement, logistics, search and rescue, and potentially anti-submarine or attack-helicopter missions depending on air wing composition. The ship also retains amphibious landing functions through a well deck and vehicle spaces, making it a combined sea-and-air assault platform. This blend is strategically valuable because helicopters can move forces over beaches and obstacles while landing craft carry heavier equipment. The ship's command and control role is just as important as its carrying capacity, especially during complex amphibious operations.

The Type 075's service entry changed how observers assess Chinese amphibious options. Earlier Chinese amphibious forces were often viewed through the lens of regional or Taiwan-contingency scenarios, but large helicopter assault ships also support distant-seas presence, evacuation operations, and maritime security missions. The class does not by itself solve the difficulty of opposed amphibious landings, which require air superiority, logistics, escorts, and trained ground forces. It does, however, give the PLAN a more capable platform for rehearsing and executing complex amphibious and expeditionary tasks.
