Research Notes

China's first large-deck amphibious assault ship class

medium

The Type 075 was developed to give the PLAN a large-deck aviation amphibious platform, expanding beyond earlier landing ships and docks.

The Type 075 landing helicopter dock marked a major expansion of Chinese amphibious capability. Built by Hudong-Zhonghua for the PLAN, the class gave China a large-deck aviation assault ship rather than a traditional landing ship focused mainly on well-deck and vehicle delivery. Its development reflected the PLAN Marine Corps' growing requirement for vertical lift, sea-based command, and amphibious task-group operations across greater distances.

Aviation-centered amphibious platform

medium

Type 075 ships combine a full-length flight deck, hangar, well-deck amphibious features, command spaces, and defensive systems to support helicopter assault operations.

Technically, the Type 075 is centered on aviation. The ship's full-length flight deck and hangar support multiple helicopters for troop lift, anti-submarine tasks, search-and-rescue, and command support. Its amphibious configuration also includes spaces for embarked marines, landing craft, vehicles, and command functions. Defensive weapons protect the ship locally, but its main combat value comes from transporting, coordinating, and sustaining an amphibious force from the sea.

Amphibious task-group and expeditionary role

medium

The class supports PLAN amphibious assault, disaster relief, evacuation, command, and regional presence missions as China builds a more expeditionary navy.

Operationally, Type 075 ships allow the PLAN to organize larger amphibious task groups with helicopter mobility and command capacity. Their missions may include amphibious assault, island operations, evacuation of citizens, disaster response, maritime presence, and joint exercises. The class does not by itself solve all amphibious lift requirements, but it substantially improves China's ability to project marine forces from offshore positions and to coordinate aviation-heavy landing operations.
