Research Notes

Six-rifle light tank destroyer

medium

The M50 Ontos mounted six 106 mm recoilless rifles on a small tracked chassis.

The M50 Ontos was developed as a light, mobile anti-tank vehicle. The U.S. Army's Rock Island Arsenal tour describes it as a system with six 106 mm recoilless rifles, while War History Online summarizes its unusual place in U.S. armored-vehicle history. The name Ontos, meaning 'thing', fit a vehicle that looked and fought unlike conventional tanks.

High burst fire, difficult reload

medium

The Ontos could deliver several recoilless-rifle shots quickly but had to be reloaded from outside the vehicle.

The Ontos concentrated impressive direct-fire power in a very small chassis. Six recoilless rifles allowed rapid engagement or salvo fire, and spotting rifles helped align the main weapons. The severe limitation was reload procedure: crew had to leave the protection of the vehicle to reload the external rifles, reducing survivability in sustained combat.

Marine infantry support in Vietnam

medium

Although conceived for anti-tank work, the Ontos became valued by Marines for direct fire against bunkers and infantry positions.

The Ontos did not become a long-lived Army tank destroyer, but Marines used it effectively in Vietnam as a compact direct-fire support vehicle. Its recoilless rifles could hit bunkers, buildings, and ambush positions with heavy explosive fire. That operational history explains why a technically awkward vehicle is still remembered as a distinctive and useful combat system.
