Martel was a joint British and French air-to-surface missile family. Its name reflected two guidance concepts: television guidance for precision attack and passive anti-radiation homing for suppressing radar emitters.
The British AJ.168 version used television guidance for surface targets, while the AS.37 anti-radiation version targeted radar emissions. This made Martel more flexible than a single-purpose missile, although it required specific aircraft integration and mission planning.
Martel's airframe and operational experience fed later British and French missile development. Britain moved toward Sea Eagle for anti-ship work and ALARM for anti-radar attack, while France developed the ARMAT anti-radiation missile from the same broad lineage.
