KM-SAM, also known as Cheongung or M-SAM, is a South Korean medium-range surface-to-air missile system developed to replace older Hawk batteries. It reflects South Korea's move toward indigenous layered air and missile defense.
The system combines mobile launchers, radar, and guided interceptors for medium-range air defense. Later Cheongung-II/KM-SAM Block II development added a stronger missile-defense role, broadening the system beyond aircraft interception.
KM-SAM is important because it is both a domestic replacement for legacy U.S.-origin systems and an exportable South Korean defense product. Its success supports Seoul's broader defense-industrial strategy and regional air-defense resilience.
