The P-700 Granit, NATO SS-N-19 Shipwreck, was developed as a large supersonic anti-ship missile for Soviet submarines and heavy surface combatants. It reflected a Cold War requirement to threaten U.S. carrier groups at long range.
Granit's mass, speed, and warhead size made it very different from smaller ship-launched missiles. Open sources emphasize salvo use, complex targeting assumptions, and launch platforms such as Oscar-class submarines and Kirov/Kuznetsov-type ships.
The missile is important because it embodied Soviet anti-carrier thinking: combine submarines, aircraft, sensors, and heavy missiles to saturate naval defenses. Modern Russian systems such as Oniks and Tsirkon should be distinguished from this older Granit generation.
