Research Notes

Soviet medium-range anti-ship missile

The P-120 Malakhit, NATO reporting name SS-N-9 Siren, was a Soviet anti-ship missile used by missile corvettes and submarines. It occupied a middle position between small tactical anti-ship missiles and very large cruiser-launched weapons.

Compact enough for smaller missile platforms

Malakhit gave smaller Soviet combatants a heavier punch than gun-armed ships of comparable size. Its launch arrangements and booster configuration allowed use from compact naval platforms, supporting the Soviet preference for distributing missile firepower across many hulls.

Associated with Ovod and submarine launch roles

The system is closely linked to Nanuchka/Ovod-class missile corvettes and certain submarine applications. Its relevance declined as newer missiles with better seekers, lower flight profiles, and improved countermeasure resistance entered service.
