Research Notes

Early Soviet ship-launched anti-ship cruise missile

The KSShch was an early Soviet anti-ship cruise missile, known in Western reporting as SS-N-1 Scrubber. It represented the first generation of large naval cruise missiles built to give surface ships long-range striking power against enemy combatants.

Large missile shaped by early cruise-missile technology

Compared with later anti-ship missiles, KSShch was large and mechanically cumbersome, reflecting the limits of 1950s guidance, propulsion, and shipboard launch technology. Its importance lay in proving that missile armament could become a primary naval weapon rather than a specialist add-on.

Transitional system on missile-converted ships

KSShch was used on early Soviet missile ships such as Kildin and Kanin-class conversions. It was soon overtaken by more practical missile families, but it marks the transition from gun cruisers and destroyers toward missile-centered Soviet naval design.
