The PL-12, also known by the export SD-10 family, is a Chinese active radar-guided beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. It marked a major step beyond semi-active radar weapons by allowing launch aircraft to support engagements with less continuous illumination burden.
The missile's active seeker, mid-course support, and BVR mission place it in the same operational category as other modern medium-range active-radar missiles. It became especially important for JF-17, J-10, and other Chinese-linked fighter programs.
PL-12's significance is not only its own performance but its place in China's missile-development ladder. It created industrial and operational experience that helped China move toward newer weapons such as PL-15 and the very-long-range PL-17.
