The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin was an American prototype fighter aircraft designed to be deployed from the bomb bay of the Convair B-36 bomber as a parasite fighter. It was intended to defend bombers from hostile interceptor aircraft. The XF-85 featured a distinctive potato-shaped fuselage and a forked-tail stabilizer design. It was powered by a single Westinghouse XJ34-WE-22 turbojet engine with 3,000 lbf thrust, and armed with four .50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns. The aircraft had no landing gear and was equipped with a retractable hook for docking with the bomber. The program was canceled in 1949 after testing showed difficulties in docking and inferior performance compared to contemporary jet fighters.
