HQ-16

HQ-16 was developed to fill the medium-range layer in Chinese land and naval air defence, sitting between short-range point defence and long-range systems such as HQ-9. Its export form, LY-80, shows how China packages the system for foreign armies needing a complete battery rather than a single missile. The system is widely associated with CASC/SAST development and Chinese efforts to build layered coverage.

HQ-16/LY-80 uses mobile launch vehicles, command and control elements, radar, and vertically launched missiles. It is intended to engage aircraft, cruise missiles, drones, and some tactical missile threats depending on variant and radar integration. Vertical launch gives the system broad engagement geometry, while battery-level networking lets it protect field forces or fixed sites.

HQ-16 variants serve with Chinese ground and naval forces and have been exported as LY-80 systems, including to Pakistan. Its importance lies in making China's air-defence network denser, not merely longer-ranged. Medium-range systems such as HQ-16 are essential because they cover gaps that expensive long-range batteries cannot economically fill everywhere.
