Taiwan's Indigenous Tien Kung Air-Defense Family

medium

Sky Bow, known locally as Tien Kung, is Taiwan's indigenous surface-to-air missile family developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology. It was created to strengthen Taiwan's layered air defense alongside imported systems such as Patriot. The family includes multiple generations, with later variants improving range, guidance, and ballistic-missile defense potential.

Layered SAM and Missile-Defense Role

medium

Sky Bow systems use fixed or mobile launchers, radar integration, and command systems to engage aircraft and missile threats. Sky Bow III in particular is associated with hit-to-kill or advanced interceptor concepts for tactical ballistic missiles and high-performance air targets. The system's effectiveness depends on radar coverage, command integration, interceptor inventory, and survivability against Chinese missile and air attacks.

Taiwan Air-Defense Resilience

medium

Operationally, Sky Bow contributes to Taiwan's defensive strategy by complicating air superiority, missile attack, and coercive strike planning. Indigenous production reduces dependence on foreign supply and allows Taiwan to tailor systems to local geography and threat profiles. It is one of the clearest examples of Taiwan converting industrial capacity into survivable layered defense against a larger opponent.
