Research Notes

Agni-II Prime becomes Agni-IV

Agni-IV grew from Agni-II Prime into a longer-range road-mobile missile.

Agni-IV developed from the Agni-II Prime concept into a longer-range intermediate ballistic missile. The program was shaped by India's desire for a lighter, road-mobile missile with more reach than Agni-II and a clearer bridge toward Agni-V. CSIS notes that India has flight tested the missile repeatedly since its first test cycle in 2010.

Road-mobile two-stage solid IRBM

Agni-IV emphasizes road mobility, solid fuel, and extended regional reach.

Agni-IV is a two-stage solid-fueled missile with reported range up to about 4,000 km and a payload suitable for nuclear or conventional missions. Its design uses modern guidance and thrust-vectoring approaches to improve accuracy and control. Compared with Agni-III, it is lighter and more road-mobile, making it operationally flexible for dispersal.

Bridge to India's longer-range missile force

Agni-IV is a bridge system in India's layered strategic missile family.

Agni-IV matters because it occupies the strategic space between Agni-II/III and Agni-V. Even where public status descriptions vary, the missile is central to discussions of India's maturing deterrent against regional and continental targets. A fuller page gives users context for why India fields multiple overlapping Agni variants rather than a single missile type.
