Research Notes

Self-propelled anti-aircraft gun

K30 Biho is a South Korean mobile short-range air-defence system built around twin 30 mm guns.

K30 Biho was developed to provide Republic of Korea Army units with mobile defence against low-altitude air threats. It combines a tracked chassis, sensors, and twin 30 mm guns, with later Biho Hybrid concepts adding missile launchers. Its role is to protect mechanised units and critical facilities from helicopters, low-flying aircraft, and drones.

Close air defence

The system offers rapid local engagement of low-altitude targets using guns and fire-control sensors.

Gun-based air defence remains relevant because guns can respond quickly and may be more economical than missiles against some close-range threats. Biho fills a tactical niche below medium-range missile systems, especially for forces that need air defence moving with ground units.

Drone-era relevance

Biho matters because short-range air defence has become more important as drones and loitering weapons proliferate.

Although Biho was developed before the current drone boom, its mission has become more visible. Ground forces need mobile systems that can handle low, small, and fast-appearing aerial threats. In HiWars, Biho helps explain Korea's layered approach to air defence at unit level.
