AMX-30D

The AMX-30D, or depanneur, was the armored recovery member of the AMX-30 family. French defense archive material identifies the AMX-30D recovery vehicle, while broader AMX-30 references describe the recovery version as a field maintenance and retrieval platform. It was needed because tank units require protected vehicles that can tow, lift, repair, and support damaged armor under battlefield conditions.

Unlike the gun tank, AMX-30D is a support vehicle. Its value comes from recovery equipment mounted on a protected chassis with mobility similar to the vehicles it supports. A crane, winch, dozer blade or stabilizing equipment, and repair tools allow crews to move disabled tanks, lift powerpacks or components, and prepare work positions. Using the AMX-30 chassis simplified logistics for units already operating the tank family.

In service, the AMX-30D mattered because armored forces fail quickly without recovery assets. Damaged or immobilized tanks block routes, expose crews, and consume scarce vehicles unless they can be recovered. The AMX-30D provided that capability within AMX-30-equipped formations. Its later replacement by heavier recovery vehicles also shows how support equipment had to evolve as main battle tanks became heavier and more complex.
