Development Context
mediumType 62 was a lighter Chinese tank developed for terrain where Type 59-class vehicles were less suitable.
The Type 62 light tank was developed in China as a reduced-weight companion to heavier Soviet-influenced tank designs. Its purpose was to operate in southern, mountainous, and river-crossed terrain where a full-size main battle tank could be harder to move and support. That design choice made it useful for reconnaissance, infantry support, and regional operations, but it also meant lower protection and less firepower than a true MBT.
