Development Context

medium

Type 60 was Japan's compact postwar anti-tank vehicle built around twin recoilless rifles.

The Type 60 self-propelled recoilless gun was developed in Japan during the late 1950s to give the Ground Self-Defense Force a small, mobile anti-tank platform. It reflected the period before guided missiles fully displaced recoilless rifles for light anti-armor work. Its low profile and compact size made it suitable for ambush and defensive positions, but the crew still had to accept the limits of short-range, manually loaded weapons.

Technical Profile

medium

The vehicle carried two 106 mm M40 recoilless rifles on a light tracked chassis.

Type 60's main feature was a twin M40 recoilless-rifle mount that could be raised for firing and lowered for travel. The vehicle had light armor, a three-person crew, and a small diesel-powered tracked chassis. This configuration gave it mobility and concealment, but protection and sustained fire were limited, especially because reloading exposed the crew more than a turreted tank destroyer would.

Operational Role

medium

It served as a defensive tank destroyer before newer missiles and armored vehicles made it obsolete.

Operationally, Type 60 fit Japan's home-defense posture: small teams could use terrain, fire from prepared positions, and relocate. It was not intended for armored breakthrough operations. As anti-tank guided missiles improved, a recoilless-rifle carrier became increasingly dated, but Type 60 remained a useful example of Japan's early postwar armored-vehicle development.
