Development Context
mediumType 16 MCV was built for rapid Japanese ground-force maneuver, especially island and regional defense.
Japan's Type 16 Maneuver Combat Vehicle responds to a different problem than a conventional main battle tank. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force needed mobile direct fire that could move quickly by road and support rapidly deployable units. Its wheeled chassis, 105 mm gun, and relatively light weight make it well suited to reinforcement and island-defense missions where strategic mobility matters more than tank-level armor.
