Research Notes

Japanese tracked rocket artillery system

medium

The Type 75 MLRS was developed to give JGSDF units rapid area-fire capability from a domestic tracked platform.

The Type 75 130 mm multiple rocket launcher was developed in Japan during the Cold War to provide rapid saturation fire for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. It used a modified tracked vehicle base and a multi-tube launcher to deliver concentrated rocket fire against enemy concentrations, field positions, and landing forces. Like many Japanese systems of the period, it was domestically produced and not exported.

Thirty-round 130 mm launcher on tracked chassis

medium

The vehicle combined a rear-mounted launcher pack with armored mobility and rapid salvo fire.

The Type 75 MLRS mounted a 30-round 130 mm rocket launcher on a tracked chassis derived from Japanese armored-vehicle technology. Its main advantage was volume of fire: a salvo could cover an area faster than conventional tube artillery. Its limitations were typical for unguided rockets, including lower precision, reload burden, and the need to displace quickly after firing to avoid counter-battery response.

Area fire for island and homeland defence

medium

The system supported JGSDF artillery planning against landing forces, troop concentrations, and field positions.

Operationally, Type 75 MLRS units provided rapid area suppression in support of Japan's homeland-defence doctrine. It was useful where the target was dispersed or where immediate massed fire mattered more than pinpoint accuracy. Over time, more modern rocket and missile systems reduced its relevance, but it remains a distinctive example of Japan's Cold War rocket-artillery development.
