MIM-23 Hawk

MIM-23 HAWK was developed as a U.S. medium-range surface-to-air missile system to defend against aircraft at lower and medium altitudes. Its name is commonly associated with “Homing All the Way Killer,” reflecting the semi-active radar guidance concept around which the system was built. HAWK became one of the most widely used Western air-defense systems of the Cold War.

HAWK should be understood as a battery system rather than a missile alone: acquisition radars, illuminators, launchers, command posts, and missiles all work together. Successive upgrades improved electronics, target handling, reliability, and resistance to countermeasures. The capability story is about a durable air-defense architecture that could be modernized across decades.

The HAWK system remains relevant because older air-defense inventories can be refurbished, sustained, and integrated into contemporary layered defense. DSCA’s Ukraine sustainment case shows that even legacy systems may regain operational importance when missile and drone threats are intense.
