Research Notes

Extended-range member of the Barak family

Barak ER extends the Barak family into longer-range air and missile defence.

Barak ER was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries as the extended-range interceptor within the Barak air and missile defence family. It builds on earlier Barak naval and land-based concepts but adds a booster to expand defended area and engagement reach. The missile reflects Israel's emphasis on layered, networked defence against aircraft, cruise missiles, drones, and ballistic threats.

Booster-assisted active interceptor

A booster and Barak MX integration give Barak ER longer-range layered-defence utility.

The ER configuration adds a booster stage to the Barak interceptor, allowing longer reach while preserving vertical launch and active seeker concepts. It is designed to work inside the Barak MX architecture, where radars, battle management, launchers, and interceptor types can be combined for different defence layers. The design is therefore modular at both missile and system level.

Export-focused layered defence capability

Barak ER strengthens IAI's exportable modular air-defence family.

Barak-family systems have been marketed and adopted internationally for naval and land-based air defence. Barak ER's significance is its ability to add extended reach without moving to a completely separate system family. For users comparing SAM systems, it represents Israel's exportable approach to modular air and missile defence.
