Research Notes

Vertical-launch adaptation of the MICA missile

medium

VL MICA adapts the French MICA air-to-air missile family into ground and naval short-range air defence.

VL MICA was developed by MBDA to use the MICA fire-and-forget missile as a vertical-launch air-defence effector. The system extended MICA beyond fighter aircraft into land-based and naval protection roles, giving customers a compact missile family for defending high-value sites, ships, and deployed forces.

Fire-and-forget missile with IR or RF seeker options

medium

The system can use MICA missiles with either infrared or active radar seekers, launched vertically from compact cells.

MBDA emphasizes that VL MICA can deploy missiles fitted with either passive infrared or active radio-frequency seekers. Vertical launch gives all-azimuth coverage from land launchers or ship installations, while a tactical operations centre and radar provide target detection and engagement control. The design is compact compared with larger area-defence missile systems.

Short-range force and asset protection

medium

VL MICA is used for point and local-area defence against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and guided weapons.

Operationally, VL MICA fills a short-range air-defence role for forces that need quick-reaction protection without a heavy long-range SAM battery. It can defend military and civilian assets, maneuver forces, and naval platforms. The NG evolution further improves the family with newer missile technology while preserving the same general operational niche.
