Navalized Sparrow Point-Defense Missile

RIM-7 Sea Sparrow was developed from the AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missile into a shipborne point-defense surface-to-air missile. It provided U.S. and allied ships with a compact missile defense against aircraft and later anti-ship missile threats. The system became a bridge between gun-based ship air defense and later vertical-launch systems such as ESSM.

Sea Sparrow uses semi-active radar homing and shipboard launchers to engage short-range air threats. Its performance evolved through multiple missile and launcher upgrades, including improved ability against low-flying sea-skimming missiles. Later Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile designs used the Sea Sparrow lineage while adding a more powerful airframe and vertical-launch compatibility.
