Research Notes

Next-Generation Upgrade of RBS 70

medium

RBS 70 NG is Saab's modernized version of the RBS 70 short-range air-defense system. It keeps the laser beam-riding missile concept while adding a more capable sight, automatic target tracking, night capability, and improved integration options. The NG version was developed to keep the system relevant against modern aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Automatic Tracking and All-Day Engagement

medium

RBS 70 NG combines a modern sighting system with automatic target tracker, thermal imaging, and compatibility with the Bolide missile. Automatic tracking reduces operator burden and improves engagement consistency compared with older manual tracking. The system remains tripod-based or vehicle-integrated rather than a simple shoulder-fired launcher, giving it a more deliberate point-defense profile.

Modern VSHORAD Against Air and Drone Threats

medium

In modern use, RBS 70 NG protects bases, formations, and critical sites from low-altitude threats. Its laser guidance is valuable against targets using flares or other infrared countermeasures, while the modern sight improves night and poor-visibility use. It fits into layered air defense as a very-short-range system that can be networked with radars and command posts rather than relying only on local visual detection.
