Cold War Infantry Support Weapon

The M60 was developed to give U.S. troops a portable 7.62 mm belt-fed support weapon.

The M60 machine gun was developed in the postwar period as the U.S. Army sought a general-purpose automatic weapon that could replace older Browning automatic-rifle and light machine-gun roles. Its design lineage drew on lessons from German wartime weapons while adapting them to U.S. manufacturing and NATO ammunition. Adoption in the late 1950s made it a defining American support weapon of the Vietnam and Cold War era.

Belt-Fed 7.62 mm Layout

Gas operation, belt feed, and a changeable barrel made the M60 suitable for sustained fire.

The weapon is gas-operated, air-cooled, belt-fed, and chambered for 7.62x51 mm NATO ammunition. It fires from an open bolt and was built around infantry portability, vehicle mounting, and sustained-fire support rather than precision marksmanship. Its design offered valuable firepower at squad and platoon level, though later variants and replacements addressed ergonomics, barrel handling, and long-term durability concerns.

Vietnam and Post-Vietnam Service

The M60 became a signature U.S. machine gun and remained in use through upgraded variants.

The M60 saw wide U.S. service in Vietnam, where it was carried by infantry and mounted on helicopters, vehicles, and riverine craft. It remained in American inventories through improved versions such as the M60E3 and M60E4 even as many roles shifted to the M240 family. Its battlefield visibility and long service life made the M60 one of the best-known Western machine guns of the late twentieth century.

1951T161 prototype series begins

US Ordnance work that had run from the wartime T24 through the T44 and T52 was consolidated into the T161, redesigned around mass production and a bolt-mounted feed actuator.

1957-01T161E3 type-classified as the M60

Adopted on 30 January 1957 as the US Army's first true general-purpose machine gun, intended to replace the M1919A6 and the BAR in one weapon.

1965Combat debut in Vietnam

Fielded across Army and Marine rifle platoons from the 1965 build-up. Troops nicknamed it "the Pig" and worked around a barrel-change drill that carried the bipod and gas system on the barrel and required an asbestos mitt.

1986M60E3 fielded

A roughly 2.3 kg lighter version with a forward pistol grip, receiver-mounted bipod and simplified barrel change, adopted mainly by the Marine Corps; the weight saving came at a cost in sustained-fire barrel life.

1994M60E4 introduced; US Navy adopts it as the Mk 43 Mod 0

Saco Defense's M60E4 corrected much of the E3's durability shortfall and offered multiple barrel lengths. Naval special warfare fielded it as the Mk 43 Mod 0; the later Mod 1 added M1913 rail interfaces.

1995M240 selected over the M60 in US Army trials

Medium machine gun upgrade testing rated the FN MAG-derived M240 markedly more reliable than upgraded M60s (reported). The M240B progressively displaced the M60 in Army and Marine ground units through the late 1990s and 2000s.

2015Denmark adopts the U.S. Ordnance M60E6

Copenhagen selected the 9.27 kg M60E6 to replace its MG3s. Endurance testing reported 25,000 rounds per gun with two to three stoppages, well beyond the 7,500-round mean-rounds-between-stoppages specification.

2024-09US Army awards a new M60 family contract

Program Manager Soldier Lethality awarded U.S. Ordnance about USD 14.96 million for M60E4 and M60E6 guns and conversion kits, running to September 2029; the end user was not disclosed.

The M60 mattered less as a weapon than as a doctrinal decision. By merging the light and heavy machine gun roles into a single 7.62mm belt-fed gun carried at platoon level, the US Army committed to the German general-purpose concept it had studied since 1945 and abandoned the M1919/BAR split. That choice — sustained automatic fire organic to the infantry platoon, mountable on trucks, boats and helicopter doors — has outlasted the gun itself and still defines how Western infantry is organised.

Execution was weaker than the concept. The stamped receiver, fixed headspace, a gas piston that could be reassembled backwards, and a barrel change that moved the bipod and gas system with the barrel produced a weapon that armourers, rather than gunners, had to keep serviceable. Successive fixes — the lighter M60E3, then the more durable M60E4 and Mk 43 — narrowed the gap, but the 1990s Army trials that chose the FN MAG-derived M240 settled the argument on reliability grounds, and the M240 remains the US ground standard today.

The design has nonetheless proved unusually persistent. U.S. Ordnance keeps the line alive with the M60E6, adopted by Denmark in 2015 and still credible in endurance testing, and its 2-3 kg weight advantage over the M240B remains genuine for dismounted and special operations users. The US Army's 2024 contract for M60E4 and M60E6 guns and conversion kits — end user undisclosed — indicates continuing utility in security assistance and niche roles rather than any return to front-line US service.
