Chinese 5.8 mm general-purpose machine gun
mediumThe Type 88, or QJY-88, was designed to replace older Type 67 machine guns with a lighter 5.8 mm support weapon.
The QJY-88, also known as Type 88, is a Chinese machine gun developed by Norinco around the late 1980s. It was intended to replace older 7.62 mm Type 67 machine guns in some PLA roles while using China's newer 5.8x42 mm ammunition family. The design reflects a distinctive Chinese decision: instead of adopting a heavier full-power rifle-caliber GPMG pattern like PKM or FN MAG, the PLA explored a lighter support weapon firing a small-caliber high-velocity round. That made the Type 88 an unusual member of the global machine-gun landscape.
