General-Purpose Machine Gun

The FN MAG is a belt-fed 7.62 mm general-purpose machine gun used from infantry tripods to vehicle mounts.

The FN MAG is one of FN Herstal's most important machine guns, designed around the general-purpose machine-gun concept. FN Herstal's own history describes the weapon's move toward global market dominance, while open-source profiles note its many national variants and designations. The MAG can serve as a light support weapon, a sustained-fire tripod gun, or a vehicle and aircraft-mounted weapon depending on configuration.

Sustained 7.62 Mm Fire Support

MAG provides durable belt-fed firepower for infantry and mounted formations.

The MAG's enduring value comes from reliability, maintainability, and a cartridge that provides greater range and penetration than 5.56 mm light machine guns. Its belt feed and quick-change barrel support sustained fire, while flexible mounts allow use on vehicles, helicopters, naval craft, and defensive positions. That flexibility explains why many countries still retain MAG derivatives even after modernizing rifles and optics.

A Benchmark NATO Machine Gun

MAG derivatives such as the M240 and L7 helped make the design a benchmark Western GPMG.

The FN MAG's influence is visible through licensed and derivative versions adopted by major militaries. In U.S. service, the M240 family performs many of the same roles; in British service, the L7 lineage became similarly important. That spread makes the MAG a useful anchor for understanding Western support-weapon doctrine: a rugged 7.62 mm gun that can move between infantry, vehicle, and fixed positions with relatively minor changes.
