Walrus

The Walrus class was developed in the Netherlands as a successor to earlier Dutch conventional submarines. Designed and built for the Royal Netherlands Navy, the class entered service from the late Cold War and remains central to Dutch undersea capability pending replacement. It gave the Netherlands a capable long-range conventional submarine force for NATO and national missions.

Technically, the Walrus class is a diesel-electric attack submarine. Its twin-hull/teardrop design and quiet operation support surveillance and sea-denial tasks. The boats carry torpedoes and sophisticated sensors, but unlike nuclear submarines they must manage battery endurance and snorkeling requirements during long patrols.

Operationally, the Walrus class is valuable for intelligence collection, special operations support, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine training, and NATO deployments. Small submarine fleets can have strategic effect because their presence is hard to confirm. Replacement planning reflects the class's age, but also its continuing importance to Dutch naval policy.
