AN/SPY-1

The AN/SPY-1 series is inseparable from Aegis. The US Navy fact file describes Aegis as an automated command-and-control and weapons-control system whose heart is the AN/SPY radar. The first SPY-1 engineering development model was installed in USS Norton Sound in 1973, setting the pattern for later cruiser and destroyer combat systems built around continuous radar search, tracking, and missile guidance.

Unlike rotating air-search radars, SPY-1 uses fixed phased-array antennas integrated into the ship's superstructure. This allows rapid electronic beam steering, simultaneous multi-target tracking, and support for missile engagements. The Navy notes that the radar can search, track, and support missile guidance functions at the same time. That made SPY-1 a defining sensor for modern naval air defense and later ballistic-missile-defense missions.

In service, AN/SPY-1 changed how surface combatants defended fleets against aircraft and missiles. It equipped US Navy Aegis cruisers and destroyers and influenced export Aegis ships in allied navies. Later radars such as SPY-6 and SPY-7 were developed to meet newer integrated air and missile defense demands, but SPY-1 remains important as the system that made large-scale automated naval air defense practical.
