Overview
CL-415 Super Scooper
The CL-415, developed from the CL-215 water bomber, features enhanced power, reliability, and aerodynamic improvements, including updated engines and a refined water-release system. With its maiden flight in 1993 and production ceasing in 2015, a total of 95 units were built, and the program was later acquired by Viking Air, which is developing a modernized version, the CL-515.

Purpose-Built Amphibious Water Bomber

The CL-415 Super Scooper is an amphibious firefighting aircraft designed around rapid water pickup and repeat drops.

The CL-415 is a purpose-built amphibious aerial-firefighting aircraft rather than a converted transport. Its hull, landing gear, and tank system allow it to operate from either runways or suitable bodies of water. De Havilland Canada describes the later CL-415EAF upgrade with winglets, finlets, higher operating weights, and an improved firebombing system. That design focus makes the aircraft especially valuable when fires are near lakes, reservoirs, rivers, or coastal water sources.

Fast Reload Cycle Near The Fire

The aircraft's key advantage is repeatedly scooping water without returning to an airport or tanker base.

The Super Scooper concept is built around sortie rhythm. Instead of landing to refill, the aircraft skims a water surface, loads thousands of liters, climbs away, and returns to the fire line. That cycle can deliver a high volume of water or retardant in terrain where road access is poor and helicopters may lack payload. The CL-415EAF modernization line preserves that mission while updating older aircraft for continuing service.

Climate And Civil-Protection Relevance

As wildfire seasons lengthen, CL-415-family aircraft have become strategically important civil-protection assets.

Although not a combat aircraft, the CL-415 is relevant to national-security databases because wildfire response increasingly affects military, civil-defense, and emergency-management planning. Large fires threaten bases, infrastructure, borders, and population centers. Aircraft like the CL-415 provide a specialized capability that cannot be replaced easily by generic cargo aircraft. Its continued upgrades and fleet transfers show how legacy airframes can remain important when mission design is unusually well matched to operational need.
