Overview
ADATS
The ADATS (Air Defense Anti-Tank System) is a dual-role missile system developed in the 1980s for anti-aircraft and anti-armor capabilities, featuring radar-guided missiles on an armored vehicle. It can engage low-flying aircraft and ground targets with a range of up to 6 miles for aerial threats and 2.5 miles for armored vehicles, showcasing innovative technology that remains relevant in modern multi-role missile systems.

Research Notes

Ambitious dual-role missile system

ADATS tried to combine short-range air defense and anti-tank firepower.

ADATS was developed as a combined Air Defense Anti-Tank System, aiming to use one missile system against low-flying aircraft and armored vehicles. The concept attracted interest because forward units needed both short-range air defense and anti-armor capability. Canada adopted ADATS, while the United States evaluated it for forward-area air defense but encountered acquisition and testing concerns.

Laser-guided missile on armored carrier

ADATS paired a sensor turret with missiles for both aircraft and armor targets.

The system used a turreted launcher and sensor package mounted on an armored vehicle, with missiles intended for both aerial and ground targets. Its dual-role idea made it unusual: the same launcher could theoretically defend against helicopters or engage tanks. The design also made the system complex, because air-defense reaction time, anti-armor penetration, sensors, and command integration all had to work together.

Canadian service and US cancellation lessons

ADATS illustrates the risk and appeal of multi-role air-defense procurement.

ADATS is remembered as much for acquisition lessons as for its operational role. The US GAO report documented test and performance concerns, while Canada fielded the system before eventual retirement. For HiWars, ADATS is valuable because it shows why elegant multi-role concepts can struggle when cost, testing, doctrine, and reliability meet real procurement decisions.
