Research Notes

Development as the Akeron MP missile

MMP, now named Akeron MP, was developed by MBDA as France's fifth-generation medium-range anti-tank missile.

The Missile Moyenne Portée, later renamed Akeron MP, was developed by MBDA France to replace older anti-tank missile systems such as MILAN in French service. It was designed as a modern man-portable and vehicle-integrated missile with digital architecture, multi-mode guidance, and networked operation. MBDA presents Akeron MP as a fifth-generation missile in service, reflecting its seeker, firing post, and operator interaction features. The system entered French Army service in the late 2010s.

Multi-mode guidance and target set

The missile combines imaging infrared/TV guidance, fire-and-forget, man-in-the-loop, and top-attack style employment.

Akeron MP's capability is built around flexibility. The firing post includes sensors and digital controls, while the missile's seeker and data link allow different engagement modes. Operators can use fire-and-forget against appropriate targets or retain man-in-the-loop control for complex shots. The missile is designed to attack modern armored vehicles, fortifications, and other high-value targets, and it can be integrated on vehicles or used by dismounted teams. This makes it more versatile than older wire-guided systems.

Service and modernization role

Akeron MP is central to France's modern anti-armor capability and MBDA's Akeron family.

In service, Akeron MP gives French forces a more modern anti-tank guided missile with better sensors, engagement modes, and digital integration than legacy systems. MBDA's broader Akeron branding also places it inside a family of tactical missiles, linking man-portable and longer-range future systems. The missile is important because contemporary ground combat has renewed attention on portable anti-armor weapons, especially those that can defeat tanks, fortifications, and targets in complex terrain without exposing crews for long periods.
