Overview
Milan
The MILAN is a European wire-guided anti-tank missile system developed in the 1970s through a collaboration between France and Germany, known for its manual steering and adaptability across various launch platforms. While effective with incremental improvements in range and warhead capabilities, it is considered somewhat outdated compared to modern systems, lacking advanced features like fire-and-forget capability.

Research Notes

Franco-German ATGM Standard

medium

MILAN is a Franco-German anti-tank guided missile family developed by Euromissile and widely adopted by European and export users. It became a standard medium anti-tank weapon for infantry and vehicle-mounted teams during the Cold War. Its importance comes from the large user base and its place between light disposable weapons and heavier long-range missile systems.

Guided Infantry Anti-Armor Firepower

medium

MILAN gave infantry units a guided, tripod-fired weapon capable of engaging armored vehicles at distances beyond unguided rockets. The system’s wire-guided control concept required trained operators to track the target through missile flight, which shaped tactics and exposure time. Later versions improved warheads and performance against evolving armor.

Legacy and Replacement Context

medium

MILAN’s relevance today is partly historical and partly institutional: many armies built tactics, training, and procurement around the system before moving to newer weapons such as MMP/Akeron or Javelin. MBDA’s discussion of MMP as replacing Milan and Javelin in French service shows how old ATGM roles are being modernized. The page should explain the lineage from wire-guided ATGMs to modern fire-and-forget systems.
