Development as a disposable anti-tank weapon

Panzerfaust 3 replaced older German anti-armor weapons with a modern recoilless launcher family.

The Panzerfaust 3 was developed in West Germany to provide infantry with a portable anti-tank weapon capable of defeating modern armored vehicles. It continued the German tradition of simple shoulder-fired anti-armor weapons while adding modern warheads, sighting options, and reusable firing-unit concepts. The system was designed for use by infantry rather than specialist missile teams, giving small units a way to threaten tanks, fortifications, and vehicles at close combat ranges.

Warheads and close-range anti-armor role

The family uses disposable launch tubes with reusable sights and specialized warheads for armor and structures.

Panzerfaust 3's capability comes from matching warhead type to target. Tandem-charge variants address explosive reactive armor, while bunker and multi-purpose variants support urban and field fortification attacks. The weapon is not a long-range guided missile; it is an infantry close-range system that can be carried and fired with relatively little setup. This makes it tactically important in urban fighting and defensive positions where short engagement distances are common and rapid reaction matters.

Service and contemporary relevance

Panzerfaust 3 has remained relevant through upgrades and renewed demand for infantry anti-armor weapons.

The weapon has served with Germany and export users and gained renewed attention as modern wars demonstrated the importance of portable anti-armor weapons. Even advanced armies still need simple, reliable systems that infantry can carry in numbers. Panzerfaust 3's continuing relevance comes from that practicality: it is easier to distribute than heavy missile systems, works in close terrain, and can attack both vehicles and hardened positions depending on ammunition.
