Research Notes

Early Soviet Heavy ATGM

Falanga was an early long-range Soviet anti-tank missile for helicopters and vehicles.

The 3M11 Fleyta / 9M17 Falanga family, known to NATO as AT-2 Swatter, belongs to the first generation of Soviet guided anti-tank weapons. It was developed when armies were still learning how to integrate missiles with helicopters, armored vehicles, and anti-tank units. The system offered longer reach than recoilless rifles or tank guns of its era, but demanded careful operator control.

Command-Guided Missile

Early versions relied on manual command guidance, with later versions improving control methods.

Falanga missiles used command guidance rather than autonomous seekers. The operator had to keep the missile aligned with the target, making training and visibility critical. The missile was large compared with later man-portable ATGMs, which suited helicopter and vehicle mounts but made it less convenient for dismounted infantry.

Export and Helicopter Use

The missile became associated with Mi-4, Mi-8, Mi-24, and vehicle-mounted anti-tank roles.

Falanga systems served with Soviet and export users and appeared on multiple aircraft and ground platforms. Their importance is historical: they show the move from unguided anti-armor weapons toward helicopter-launched guided missiles. Later systems such as Shturm and Ataka improved speed, guidance, and warhead performance, but Falanga helped establish the role.
