Gun-launched missile for Soviet 125 mm tanks
Svir gave 125 mm Soviet tanks a barrel-launched guided missile option.
9M119 Svir was developed to give Soviet 125 mm smoothbore tank guns a guided anti-tank missile capability. The concept allowed tanks such as the T-72B to engage armored targets at longer ranges than conventional kinetic rounds under suitable conditions. It formed part of a broader Soviet interest in gun-launched guided missiles for main battle tanks.
