Research Notes

Early Chinese intermediate-range missile

The DF-3, known to NATO as CSS-2, was an early Chinese liquid-fueled intermediate-range ballistic missile. It represented a major step in China's Cold War missile development by giving the country a regional nuclear delivery system before later generations of solid-fueled and road-mobile missiles became available.

Legacy system with export history

The DF-3A is historically notable because China exported a conventionally armed version to Saudi Arabia, showing that strategic missile systems could also serve diplomatic and deterrent purposes outside China's own force. In Chinese service, the type was progressively displaced by more survivable and accurate missiles.
